Are You Listening?

There is a lot going on these days

Lately, I’ve read a lot of news and I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts and news broadcasts.

I’ve been hearing a lot.

But you know what?

I’m not sure if I’m really listening and understanding.

Hearing and listening are not the same thing, of course. I can hear someone talk and understand what they are saying, but I may not be listening to what they are trying to communicate.

This happens quite a bit, in relationships and in the workplace. People may say one thing that you can take literally, but you and I both know that they may be communicating something else.

For some reason, I believe that I am not able to really listen to all of the changes happening in the world right now. I can read the news and hear the reporters just fine, but I get the feeling that there is a lot of subtext not being said.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone that would seem trivial if it were transcribed? But maybe there was enough body language and eye contact to take the both of you to a place of wonder.

I get the feeling that things are pretty fragile in the world these days, that maybe we have a couple weeks or months until the going gets tough. I can’t tell you why or how I feel this way, but I just do.

Regardless, we need to stay strong and confident. We’ve got to save as much money as possible. And we should support our family and friends as much as humanly possible. We can do it.
