Find a good space to write or you might get interrupted and then lose your focus

Writing is often about getting an idea and running with it while you have the momentum.

What can stop that?

Interruptions!

That’s right. Unwanted distractions can have a seriously unwelcome and negative effect on the writing process.

Make sure you have a good, quiet space for yourself when you do your writing. Some people like music in the background so that is fine too. Find your pure comfort space or spaces.

Above all else, find your zone so that you can focus on writing or creating content. Then make sure everybody knows that this is your dedicated space and time to do your written work.

Don’t Lose It

While you are in your writing space, make sure you have pens, paper or electronic devices.

One you get an idea, whatever it is, write it down as soon as possible. Write quickly. Every little bit could be important.

One time I worked as an intern at a magazine and one of the writers stormed out of her office and said, “Who touched my desk? I’m missing a tiny piece of paper with my notes!"

Now it wasn’t me who touched her desk. And maybe her note was lost in a pocket somewhere. She calmed down after a while.

Don’t Doubt

If you are working on some piece of content, just go with it. Don’t doubt yourself or criticize.

Let the writing take you where it wants to go. If you seem off track, start a new paragraph and get back to where you need to be.

Let others know that there is a detour when you are doing your writing. They can stop. They can go around. They can do anything they want as long as they don’t bother you until you are done writing.
