She Kissed Me Slowly Under the Moonlight That Evening

It was cold, but we were warm.

“I know the perfect spot," she said as she pulled me along in the early evening so many years ago.

It was early evening on a Friday in late July. We were near some tall sand cliffs in Monterey, California. And nobody was around as far as my eyes could see.

It was cool, but not cold. We felt the breeze as the ocean waves crashed nearby, and there was a little mist. I think a spotted a yacht out in the distance.

“Right up here," she directed me.

The sand got a little softer and colder under a feet as we maneuvered into a tall open space between two cliffs.

“I’ve thought of us right here and what it would be like,” she whispered as she pulled me closer and we both looked out at the Pacific ocean.

If you know Monterey at all, you know about the tall sand cliffs along the beaches that are less frequented, the ones a few miles up the road, the ones close to expensive timeshare condos where they use little golf carts to get around and the owners and guests take pictures of sunsets on their phones and tablets.

We finally had this night to ourselves. The sun was setting and our bodies warmed each other. She held my head in her hands and pulled my face close to hers.

I tried to force myself to remember this moment, to etch the feeling of sand on my feet deep into my memories, to really memorize the moment as best I could.

I know know like I knew then that certain gloriously powerful moments can be rare, that you have to latch onto them as tightly as possible when you’re in the moment.

The sun seemed to set quicker as she kissed me slowly under the moonlight. We were warm now, with our bodies so close together, our arms around each other, and ourselves snug against and between the walls of the sand cliffs. It was a perfect moment in so many ways that it’s hard to write about it now.

A sunset kiss on a beach in Monterey, California, with nobody around. The waves splashed and that was all that I could hear and all I wanted to hear.

She kissed me more and I kissed her back, and I hope she enjoyed it then as much as I did. My hands disappeared in her long brown hair.

“Hold me tighter," she commanded gently, and I was happy to oblige.

The sunset was finishing but, well, we were just getting started and we weren’t about to let the evening end.

She directed my right hand down low against her sweatpants and in between her legs. She kissed me more and I kissed her back.

It was dark with the sun already set in the distance. I can still feel her now as I felt her then, as she leaned back against the sand and we made love that wonderful evening.

Time went too fast, though we did everything we could to slow it down.
