What I Love About Medium

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? (sayeth William Shakespeare)

I’m really new to Medium and this community of writers and storytellers, and I admit that I can’t believe my luck that I found about it. Evidently it has been around for quite a number of years and so I wonder how I could not have found out about it until this year.

So you’re telling me there is this place where writers get together and share their work, like in a great big cafe in some cool European city, and the locals appreciate their writings and musings, and they clap for them? Or maybe they follow them up to the microphone and make a short comment?

I mean, I love reading and writing and Medium lets you do as much as you want for a small fee. Let’s tell the world about this. No, let’s keep it a secret.

Okay, I want to do both of these things. I don’t want the cafe to get too crowded, but I want others to know about the great content too.

I admit that I don’t mind waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to sleep because, well, something’s happening on Medium.

There is this one writer I know on Medium who does great poetry and I’m going to spend some extra time reading her work because I know she puts in big effort.

And you tell me that since I’m a paying member, that the money I pay goes toward the Medium writers that I read, and that I help support them when I see and enjoy their writing?

This is so great. I can do my part to support and encourage the work of poets, fiction writers, and other types of storytellers.

There is another Medium writer I know and she has the courage to write about some topics that make me blush a bit, but I support her when and where I can on Medium.

I heard that if you like specific content on Medium, you can push the clap button and it will show your acknowledgment. Forgive me but I learned only last month that you can keep pressing the clap button until it gets to 50 to show maximum enjoyment.

I am definitely going to try to remember to clap a higher number when I really like something. I don’t care how long it takes to get to the higher numbers because I think numbers matter.

I don’t know how much commenting matters, but I’m going to try to be more specific in my comments. Granted, words, in the absence of tone or body language, can be misinterpreted. So please know that if you ever see a comment from me that it means I am writing to show my support.

There are other writers who produce great content on a regular basis, and their content is wonderful and their formatting beautiful. I feel guilty sometimes, like I’m in this great big library with so much great work that is topical, useful, relevant, and timely.

Yes, getting paid to write on Medium is a very important thing, and it is exciting to know about all of the success stories. There are plenty more who would like higher earnings and I understand that.

I am really new to Medium so my advice is based on what I have learned so far, and that advice is to find content that you enjoy, or that you find useful, or both. Encourage other writers. Do good work and contribute to the community as much as you can. These are real people here on Medium so be nice.

I love how everything is set up. There is no advertising at all so that alone makes it one of my favorite places on the internet, for sure.

I know my plan going forward. I am going to find great content and storytellers on Medium and clap or comment on their work. I am going to try to increase the quality of my own work.

Lastly, I am going to keep Medium a secret because it is so great. I mean, I’m going to share it like I would share photos of beautiful flowers as they are for everyone. Oh, maybe I will do both!
